REVIEW: REMEMBER THIS WHEN YOU'RE SAD BY MAGGY VAN EIJK

You know those days where you just need to know that someone else out there has a mind which works just as differently as yours does? Not in a 'thank god someone else has it this bad' way, but more in a 'thank god there's someone else out there who feels the same as me' way. When I first picked up Maggy Van Eijk's book, Remember This When You're Sad, I was having one of those days. When you just need someone else's words to fill up the corners of your head and remind you that things are going to be okay, they're not as bad as they seem and you're not going through them alone. And that's exactly what this book did for me.

Remember This When You're Sad is branded on the cover as 'a book for mad, sad and glad days (from someone who's right there with you)'. This book offers a very real look into what it's like to live with mental illness, told from Maggy's own experiences. It's sad and raw, relatable and inspiring. Maggy uses her own experiences to show how mental illness can affect a persons life, but also uses these experiences to provide hope and show that mental illness isn't the end of the road. We can fight it, we can live our lives not being dictated by it. And we can be okay despite it.

Self help books as a genre can often feel dark and unhopeful. They can make the reader feel like they're at the lowest place which they could possibly be in and there are huge steps that they need to take in order to get out of that place. They're often pretty patronising too. Remember This When You're Sad is none of these things. It's reassuring and honestly just really relatable. It doesn't gloss over any of the really painfully futile parts of mental illness and it's unafraid of going into detail on what it can do to your mind and body. The book reads like a friend telling you 'it's going to be okay. This is how bad it can get, but this is how good it can get again just after'.

My favourite thing about this book is the way that it's laid out in sections (Maggy shares my love for making lists about absolutely everything, so that made this book 1000x more enjoyable to flick through). It covers areas such as 'remember this when your heart aches' where it goes into detail on mental illness in relation to sex and dating, and 'Remember this when you hate your body' where the conversation is turned to dieting and body image. Each chapter is neatly packed away and so it feels like a really manageable self care book to read. You can dive in and out as you need to.

If you want to read about another persons experiences with mental illness and their tips on how they got through darker days, I'd definitely recommend giving Remember This When You're Sad a read. It'll make you laugh, it'll make you think, and it'll make you feel less alone.
